The Quick Answer
Most residential tree removals in Calgary cost between $400 and $1,200. That covers the majority of single-tree jobs in a typical Calgary backyard — think a dead poplar, a spruce that's outgrown its spot, or a birch that's leaning toward your garage.
Small ornamental trees start around $300. Large, hazardous removals — a 60-foot spruce next to a house, a dead elm over power lines — can run $2,000 to $5,000 or more. The price depends on four things: tree size, access to the tree, hazards nearby, and how much cleanup is involved.
Cost by Tree Size
Cost by Tree Species in Calgary
Different species common in Calgary neighbourhoods are more or less work to remove. Here's what you can expect:
| Species | Typical Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Crabapple / Ornamental | $300 – $500 | Small, soft wood. Quick job. |
| Birch | $400 – $900 | Medium size, often in clusters. Price drops for multiples. |
| Poplar / Aspen | $400 – $1,000 | Fast-growing, can get very tall. Soft wood but large diameter. |
| Elm | $600 – $1,500 | Hard, heavy wood. Wide canopy. Elm pruning rules apply. |
| Ash | $500 – $1,200 | Medium hardwood. Common in newer Calgary neighbourhoods. |
| Spruce | $800 – $3,000+ | Calgary's most expensive removals. Dense, heavy, tall, usually close to houses. |
| Pine (Scots/Lodgepole) | $600 – $2,000 | Tall and heavy. Sap makes cleanup harder. |
Spruce is Calgary's most common expensive removal. Many homes built in the 60s–80s have spruce trees that were small when planted and are now 50+ feet, right against the house. These often cost $1,500–$3,000 because of the height, weight, and proximity to structures.
What Drives the Price Up (and Down)
Two trees of the same species and height can have very different removal costs. Here's what moves the number:
Trunk Diameter
Height matters, but trunk thickness matters more. A 40-foot spruce with a 24-inch trunk produces much more wood than a skinny poplar the same height. More wood means more time cutting, hauling, and chipping.
Access to the Tree
Open front yard is cheapest. Tight backyard gates, narrow side yards, no alley access, or a tree behind a deck all mean more manual labour — sometimes carrying every piece out by hand.
Hazards Nearby
Power lines, fences, garages, your neighbour's deck — the more things that could get damaged, the more carefully we rig and lower each piece. Careful is slow, and slow costs more.
Dead or Decayed
Dead trees are unpredictable. Branches snap without warning, trunks can be hollow inside, and wood crumbles instead of cutting clean. More safety precautions, more rigging, slower work.
Multiple Trees
Removing 3 trees at once is cheaper per tree than 3 separate visits. Equipment is already on-site, crew is set up, mobilization cost is shared. Always ask about multi-tree pricing.
Stump Grinding
Usually quoted separately at $8–$10 per inch of trunk diameter. A 20-inch stump runs about $160–$200. You can skip it if you don't mind the stump or plan to plant over it.
What's Included vs What's Extra
This varies between companies. Some give a low price and charge extra for cleanup. At Arborista, here's how it works:
- Complete tree felling or dismantling
- All branch and debris cleanup
- Wood chipping on-site
- Hauling away all wood and chips
- Final yard sweep
- Safety planning and equipment setup
- Stump grinding ($8–$10 per inch diameter)
- Firewood cutting and stacking
- Log hauling (if you want to keep wood)
- Permit work for City trees
- Emergency / same-day response
We give a firm price after assessing the tree — not a range, not an estimate. That number doesn't change unless you add something. No surprises on invoice day.
Winter vs Summer Pricing
Calgary has a real winter, and that affects tree work. Frozen ground makes access harder, deep snow slows cleanup, and short days limit how much fits in one shift. Summer is peak season with the highest demand.
In practice, pricing is roughly the same year-round. Winter has its challenges but also advantages: frozen ground protects your lawn, there's no garden to damage, leaves are off (making the tree lighter and easier to see), and scheduling is less backed up. The best time to book is when you need it done — don't wait for a "better season" if the tree is a hazard.
The one exception: elm trees can only be removed between October 1 and March 31 under Alberta's provincial pruning ban. Plan ahead if you have an elm that needs to come down — our Calgary elm pruning guide covers the timing, disposal rules, and Dutch elm disease in detail.
Emergency Tree Removal
After a summer hailstorm or heavy wet snow event, you may need a tree removed urgently — it's on your roof, blocking your driveway, or leaning dangerously over your kids' play area. Emergency removal typically costs 25–50% more than a scheduled job, because it requires immediate mobilization, often on weekends or evenings.
If the tree is dangerous but not an immediate emergency — leaning but stable, dead but not actively falling — you can save significant money by booking a regular removal within a few days instead of an emergency call-out.
How Long Does It Take?
One of the most common questions we get. Here's the honest answer:
A small tree takes 2–3 hours. A medium tree takes half a day to a full day. A large or complex removal can take 1–2 full days. You don't need to be home — we just need access to the tree and clear instructions on where to put any wood you want to keep. We'll text you photos when it's done.
How to Get an Accurate Quote
Online price calculators don't work for tree removal — every tree and every yard is different. The fastest way to get a real number is to text or email us 3–4 photos showing:
The full tree from a distance so we can see height and shape. The trunk base so we can gauge diameter. The surroundings — house, fence, power lines, gate access. And any visible damage or decay you've noticed.
From photos we can usually give a ballpark range within hours, and schedule a free on-site visit for a firm quote within a few days.
Why the Cheapest Quote Isn't Always Best
No insurance: If the operator drops a limb on your roof or your neighbour's car, you're liable — not them. Always ask for proof of both liability and WCB coverage.
"Cash only" with no business name: No registration means no accountability. If something goes wrong, there's no one to call back.
Cleanup not included: A low quote that doesn't include hauling means you're left with a yard full of branches and a bill for dump fees on top.
Price seems too low: If someone quotes $200 for a 40-foot elm, ask what's missing. Proper tree removal has real costs — equipment, insurance, disposal, and skilled labour. A $200 quote is missing at least two of those.
At Arborista, Tony handles every job personally. We're fully insured, we give firm quotes, and cleanup is always included. No subcontractors, no bait-and-switch.
